Media Kit

Farscape Canada plans to send Media Kits to various TV columnists across Canada in the hopes that it will draw their attention to Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars. If you would like to contribute to the cost of printing and postage for one of the kits, a donation of $10.00 CAD would be most gratefully received.

Just so you know exactly what you are supporting, the contents of the Media Kits are as follows:

  • The DVD's.
    Presentation: Nicely designed labels (if I say so myself) and jewel cases.

    DVD contents:
    Farscape Introduction a really well done (short) intro to Farscape.
    Let Me Entertain You one of my favourites. (I plan on using it this year for one of my Farscape Panels.)
    Cartoon Heroes a riff on Revenging Angel and look at the insane side of Farscape.
    Scorpy Went Down to Georgia an award winning video that I used in my panel last year. (Nice insights into the John/Scorpy relationship.)
    In The End won the 2003 Clamshell for best drama. It is a good one. Lithium Doll really gets Farscape.
    Never Been Closer is about Peacekeeper Wars and the Fan Campaign. And it will make a Farscape Fan smile and break their heart at the same time.

    Because I have become a Farscape fan

    I used to visit with friends and talk every Friday
    Maybe go to dinner and a show
    That was before - my life's now a total mess
    Friday's its "turn off the phone" and "don't talk to Mommy"
    "Hon, if you'll be quiet we'll have sex"
    And so much more I sadly must confess

    Now it's an obsession
    Must have posters, magazines and autographs which make me flip
    T-shirts, mugs and action figures too
    Though they don't have kung-fu grip

    Got to have my Farscape
    Bought the DVDs and I don't even have a damn machine
    Magnets, keychains, anything I can
    Because I have become a Farscape fan

    I never cared for computers, never sent an e-mail
    Had my children set the VCR
    I filled my days discussing the news and arts
    But now I'm posting on the boards and going to chats
    Detailing every look and sigh thus far
    And all the finer points of Rygel's farts

    I used to be so very shy and retiring
    Rarely said a word to folks I knew
    These lips were sweet and pure as driven snow
    But now it's frell and yots and don't give a dren
    And button-holing strangers I don't know
    Exhorting them to watch my favorite show. (Friday nights at nine! Damn it!)

    Now I'm such a fan girl
    With a website and my fiction's strictly NC-17

    Foodscape

    BBQ KEEVDA

    1 – 300 lb. Keevda*
    1 cup of salt
    ½ cup pepper
    1 lb of zitnid** fat, softened
    Vorlag stuffing (your own favorite recipe)

    Clean and skin the keevda. A 300-lb animal will produce 175 lbs of dressed meat. Rub inside with salt and pepper. Lay meat on its side and stuff loosely with vorlag stuffing. Close cavity with skewers and lace together with budong sinew. Prepare a very large, moderately hot fire. Truss legs to body in kneeling position, and insert spit rod lengthwise through center of Keevda so it is balanced. Place meat on prepared posts over fire (about 7-8” from coals) and baste often with zitnid fat. Roast for 15-18 minutes per lb (about 31 hours) Serve with marmot sauce.

    D.K's “Frelling Critada” Frittata

    1 Medium onion, peeled and sliced paper thin
    Cooked Ham or prosciutto (or any other ingredients you like)
    1 coarsely chopped tomato (peeled and seeded)
    3 tablespoons olive oil or other cooking oil
    1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed
    4 eggs, lightly beaten
    3/4 teaspoon salt
    1/8 teaspoon pepper
    1 teaspoon basil (fresh or dried)
    2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

    Foodscape II

    Sauté onion, ham and tomato in half the oil until limp (but not brown) add garlic and cook for one minute longer. Mix ingredients with the beaten eggs, seasonings and cheese. Heat remaining oil in a 9” or 10” heavy skillet over moderate heat, add egg mixture, and cook without stirring 3-4 minutes until browned underneath and just set on top. Cut in squares, turn pieces over and brown the other side for 2-3 minutes. Serves 2-4 persons

    Scorpy Chip Cookies

    1 cup flour
    1/2 tsp baking soda
    1/2 tsp salt
    1/2 cup butter (softened to room temp)
    1/3 cup white sugar
    1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 egg
    1 (6 oz) package semi-sweet chocolate chips


    Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Sift flour, baking powder and salt, set aside. Cream butter, both sugars and vanilla until light and fluffy. Beat in egg. Mix in dry ingredients, stir in chocolate chips. Drop by heaping spoonful on a lightly greased baking sheet, spaced about 2" apart. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until lightly edged with brown.


    SCAPE-ADELIC FOOD CUBES
    (Rice Krispies Squares with a twist)

    9 tablespoons unsalted butter
    1 teaspoon salt
    12 cups (2 1/2 bags) miniature marshmallows
    6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
    6 cups Cap'n Crunch cereal *(or Cocoa Puffs)
    6 cups Froot Loops cereal * (or Lucky Charms)
    Vegetable oil cooking spray

    Lightly spray a 9-by-9-by-2-inch baking pan with vegetable oil cooking spray; set aside. Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add salt and marshmallows; stir with a wooden spoon until melted. Remove from heat. Add Rice Krispies, Cap'n Crunch, and Froot Loops, and stir until combined. Transfer the mixture to the prepared pan. To prevent sticking, coat your hands with vegetable spray, and press the mixture evenly into the pan. Press down firmly to make it all fit. Let cool for about 30 minutes. Cut into squares. Store in an airtight container. Makes enough to feed the crew for at least 1/3 of a cycle if rationed accordingly and Rygel doesn’t get a whiff of them.

    Farscape’s Peacekeeper Symbol is actually based on a 1919 Russian Constructivist painting entitled “Beat the Whites with the Red Wedge”.

    The image in this painting shows the Red Wedge - the Bolsheviks - attacking and piercing the Whites - the White Russians.

    This image choice was not an arbitrary one by Ricky Eyres, the Farscape Production Designer. His intent was to transfer many of the same themes inherent in the painting to the Farscape universe. Thus the sharp red triangle symbolizes the unified power of the Peacekeepers thrust into the scattered units of the opposition – whoever they might be.

    The writers, directors and actors incorporated this symbol into their storytelling and used it in an organic way to help advance and deepen character arcs. An example of this would be the symbols association, although not exclusive association, with Officer Aeryn Sun, the reluctant renegade Peacekeeper. Aeryn Sun sees herself as the consummate professional. She perceives Peacekeeper values and ideals as an expression of an ultimately superior way of life.

  • Aeryn Embedded in Wedge

    Here, early in the first season, Aeryn is knocked out during a sparring session. She crumples on top of the practice mat, her form embedded in the red wedge with only her small hand crossing the border into the white – reaching out into the unknown – reflecting how Aeryn herself is constrained by the narrow and confining perspective of Peacekeeper Culture.

    This image demonstrates in one simple, spectacular shot everything the audience needs to remember about Aeryn and her character arc. It reminds the viewer of Aeryn’s background, her internal conflict and her halting attempts to reach out – to be more.

    Later, in mid-season two, Aeryn’s character arc has advanced and she has rejected many of the characteristics of the Peacekeepers that she previously valued. However, her past continues to haunt her. The scene from which this image was taken begins with Aeryn working out overwhelming guilt and frustration by bare handedly pounding a heavy bag – a heavy bag symbolically designed in the shape of a red wedge.

    Collapsed on Wedge

    Aeryn strikes the heavy bag with such force and so continuously that her knuckles are raw and bleeding when she finally collapses in anguish on the practice mat, half in and half out of the red wedge. She has, both symbolically and demonstrably, beaten herself to a pulp.

    John Crichton, the only human at that end of the universe, attempts to connect with this strange alien woman and the director and actors are careful to position the characters in relation to the wedge in order to emphasize their emotional dilemma.

    Aeryn’s Peacekeeper background still separates the two, although from the camera’s perspective the red wedge is narrowing to a point and eventually disappears, perhaps foreshadowing the direction their relationship might take.

    Past, present and possible future are embodied in this striking image.
